Construction workers in Unite and GMB returned to Skelton Grange in south Leeds on Thursday 5th May where Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI) are building a new energy to waste plant but refusing to pay workers along the lines of the National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry (NAECI).

Whilst HZI have built other projects where they’ve failed to pay NAECI rates, in relation to this site, Labour-led Leeds City Council broke an agreement with unions to block developments that wouldn’t adhere to NAECI terms.
Unite and GMB members not only protested outside the HZI construction site, but also a local recycling site which is set to tilise the energy-to-waste plant for their waste, to exert pressure on HZI. The campaign will continue over future months.
